Lu Xun had been yearning for an illustrated edition of The Classic of Mountains and Rivers for more than one day. This started with a distant granduncle Yu Tian, who was neighbouring Lu Xun’s family in this compound. He was a fat and kindly old man, who liked growing some flowers and trees, such as chloranthus and jasmine. Since he had no one to chat with in his family, he enjoyed the society of kids, and sometimes just called them “young friends”. He had a magnificent collection of books, one of which was called Flower Mirror. The book, with many beautiful illustrations of flowers and trees printed on it. became the kids’ favorite one.
