Clapper talk, or Chinese Kuaibanr, is a kind of rhythmic talk or monologue accompanied by bamboo clappers and sanxian, a traditional Chinese three-stringed plucked instrument. Clapper talk has a long history. But it was not until the founding of the People’s Republic of China that clapper talk really existed as a form of quyi art. Tianjin’s clapper talk is mainly performed in Tianjin dialect, featuring strong rhythms and tunes of Tianjin folk tunes. Tianjin’s clapper talk is bold, straightforward, brisk, humorous and lively. Hence it is popular across the country, both in cities and in rural areas.
