Although the moral character depends on temperament and physical prowess to a great degree, as well as on domestic education, early training and the example of one’s peers, it is also in the power of each individual to regulate, to restrain and to cultivate it by vigilant and persevering self-control.
Self-control is the foundation of all virtues. Let a man give free rein to his impulses and passions, and from that moment he yields up his moral freedom. To be morally free—to go beyond animals man must be able to resist instinctive impulse, and this can only be done by the exercise of self-control.
