北方有座山叫發鳩山，山上長了很多柘樹。樹林里有一種鳥，它的形狀像烏鴉，頭上羽毛有花紋，白色的嘴，紅色的腳，名叫精衛，它的叫聲像在呼喚自己的名字。這其實是炎帝小女兒的化身，名叫女娃。有一次，女娃去東海游玩，溺水身亡，再也沒有回來，所以化為精衛鳥，經常叼著西山上的樹枝和石塊，用來填塞東海。
There is a mountain called Fajiu Mountain in the North, with lots of Zhe trees (Cudrania tricuspidata) growing there. In the forest lives a kind of bird named Jingwei. Its shape is like a crow, with patterns on feathers of its head, white beak and red feet. It chirps like calling its own name, Jingwei. In fact, it is the embodiment of emperor Yandi’s youngest daughter, named Nvwa (Baby Girl). Once, Nvwa played at the East China Sea, but she got drowned and never returned. So she turned into the Jingwei bird. She often holds the tree branches and rocks from the Western Hills in her mouth and flies to fill the East China Sea.
